Diverse residential and commercial neighborhood · Crossroads

Crossroads

A densely populated, exceptionally diverse east Bellevue neighborhood centered on Crossroads Shopping Center, an informal community gathering hub.

1964
Annexed

Crossroads sits in the north and eastern portion of Bellevue, south of Bellevue-Redmond Road, east of Wilburton, and north of Lake Hills. Originally called Highlands, the area saw timber harvesting in the late 1800s and then farming in the 1920s, much of it run by Japanese immigrant families until the Japanese American internment of 1942 abruptly ended it. Suburban housing replaced the farmland in the postwar years, and Crossroads was annexed to Bellevue in 1964.

By the early 2000s Crossroads had become Bellevue's second-most densely populated area after downtown, and it is one of the most ethnically diverse parts of the city: the non-white population exceeded 60 percent by 2010. The neighborhood is known as an international community with a wide range of immigrant-owned businesses.

Its heart is Crossroads Shopping Center, which opened in 1962 and was revitalized beginning in 1988 under developer Ron Sher into a vibrant unofficial community center. The mall's international food court, public chess tables, library branch, and live music venue make it function as a town square for the surrounding diverse population.
